What Omega fatty acids really do for your pet

Fatty acids are specific types of polyunsaturated fats. Animals require fatty acids because they cannot produce them on their own. More specifically, animals like dogs and cats require Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids because they aid with a whole host of bodily functions.

These include:

–       Improving skin and coat health

–       Alleviating harmful effects of allergies and other conditions that may result from an over reactive immune system response

–       Slowing the growth of common yeast infections

–       Aiding proper development of the retina and visual cortex

–       Preventing certain heart problems

–       Maintaining healthy blood pressure and decreasing triglyceride and blood cholesterol levels

–       Regulating blood-clotting activity

–       Slowing the development and spread of certain pet cancers

How it works:

Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are both incorporated into cell membranes throughout the body. When the cell membranes are damaged, fatty acids are released. Released Omega-6 fatty acids are a hundred times more likely to promote inflammation than Omega-3 fatty acids. Inflammation is beneficial if there is an infection your pet needs to fight. Most pets, however, have health problems caused by too much inflammation such as flea allergies, arthritis, and auto-immune diseases, and therefore benefit most from supplements with higher concentrations of Omega-3 fatty acids.
